About Cass, founder of Cocoon Sanctuary
Hi I’m Cass, I love the way that yoga and meditation remind us about our connection to the natural world. From my experience it is through this pathway to 'knowing that we are a part of nature and nature is a part of us; that I have again and again found myself experiencing embodied peacefulness. When we get still in mind and body we feel and listen at a deeper, more attuned level, from this place I am the most vital, strong, attentive, calm and resourceful version of myself. From this place I make my best decisions and chart a course for my life that is in unity with my heart.
It is an ongoing journey of returning to the mat, repeating and embodying yoga and mindfulness practices that allow access to this inner pool of wisdom. I yearn to share and walk this pathway with community so that I can support mummas to not only be best prepared for pregnancy and motherhood, but to be kind and loving to themselves along the path.
My journey to becoming a yoga teacher
It was 2017, I had been practicing yoga as a student for over twelve years at this time… I found myself sitting outside on the grass, looking to the mystical ocean while I was breastfeeding my first baby. It was in that moment that I felt a calling come up to learn more about yoga; it was an itch to understand the reasons why I had been practicing yoga all this time and to understand more about what the different postures and techniques were all about. This moment inspired the training that followed. I studied at the Australian Yoga Academy, weekly night-school sessions undertaken over 2018 culminated in my first 350hour Yoga Teacher qualification.
Yoga transformed my personal experiences of pregnancy and motherhood. I felt the benefits of yoga strengthening my body and mind and creating awareness and self-compassion for the profound changes underway physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. It also prepared me for the rigours of labour, birth and motherhood.
Even so, the birthday story of each of my babies was unique. With my eldest, Alfie, it was a long twenty-three hour labour. Although I was active and tried all the positions and options, resulted in an emergency caesarean. Regardless of how baby was born I still felt empowered throughout this labour and birth. It taught life lessons in releasing attachment to outcome, adapting to different ways of doing things and surrender.
Fast forward three years… the pregnancy and birth of Matilda (Tilly), my second bub, was a natural and easeful birth. Something I had been manifesting but no longer held attachment to. I was supported by my amazing pregnancy and birth team that I trusted and felt safe to be in my process with. My people included my partner Jim, Deb the Doula and Lou my Community Midwife. I continued a range of yoga movement practices as well as breathing techniques, visualisations and mantras right up to and during the labour and birth of Tilly. Throughout, I was able to feel and work with my body and baby, becoming a warrior woman of unlimited potential in the process.
Yoga continues to be a practice that I turn to daily as I continue to evolve as a mother and in all aspects of life.
At its roots it is a practice that harnesses ancient philosophy and connects people with spirituality. Today yoga is also integrated with western knowledge of anatomy and physiology, allowing the way I teach to meet the needs of diverse body types and to adapt positions for pregnancy and early motherhood. I stand on the shoulders of giants in my work to bring the myriad of benefits of yoga to women for an empowered pregnancy, birth and motherhood.
Through Cocoon Sanctuary we support mums of today and tomorrow to experience for themselves how yoga supports you holistically throughout this transformational time.
From a deepening moment to moment presence we can feel the expansion of the forever connection between mum and baby. And through a practice of physical asana (postures), pranayama (breath work), guided meditation and active birth techniques I support you to nurture your pregnancy and optimally prepare physically, mentally and spiritually to labour, birth and hold baby.
“Accessing yoga during pregnancy & motherhood becomes a potent source, strengthening inner knowing & whole being vitality.”
Growing a baby, bringing new life into the world and becoming a mother are profound times of expansion and change, marking a new chapter in a woman’s life as well as that of her family. Women need wrap around services, strong support networks of family and friends as well as a sense of community.
This time presents opportunity to realise and step into your strength, feel courageous, connect to intuition, allow and surrender to the process, trust in body and natural instincts and find and express your authentic voice. It is a rite of passage, a time of great transformation that we can explore, honour and celebrate through yoga.
I value continuous learning and am dedicated to passing on the wisdom of yoga as well as best practice to all who I have the great pleasure of working with. See my qualifications and evolving professional development journey below.
A mother of two adorable, dynamic and spirited beings, Alfie and Tilly. Nature seeker and wellbeing enthusiast.
